 We have an exciting opportunity for you to apply to our panel for the appointment of private attorneys to represent indigent parties in criminal, juvenile and dependency matters in the California Court of Appeal.

 Benefits:

  •  Training: Access to periodic training programs designed to help you with the skills needed for appellate law and effective representation. Trainings cover appellate procedures, legal writing, and case strategies to prepare you for successful representation.

  •  Assisted Cases: Opportunities to handle cases with assistance initially, allowing you to build confidence and competence in appellate law with guidance and mentorship on each case from seasoned staff attorneys.

  •  Independent Cases: As experience is gained and a history of competent work with increasing complexity is established, you can move to independent status taking cases you handle on your own. 

  •  Compensation:  Current pay rates per hour based on type of case:

    • $110 - Assisted

    • $120 - Independent

    • $130 - Upper Tier Independent       

  •  Professional Liability Coverage under CAP’s policy for panel attorneys in cases where the appointment is made through CAP-LA.

 Factors Considered:

  • Demonstrated interest in criminal, delinquency, dependency, or mental health defense.

  • Prior experience.

  • Writing, research and analytical skills.

Applications are considered on a rolling basis.  It may take three to four months for your application to be processed.
